Is it worth fixing an old air conditioner in Southington, CT?

An AC repair is typically costly; occasionally, it may even be more expensive than a complete replacement. If your unit is very new, say less than five years old, and the repair is affordable, then it makes sense to fix up the unit. However, as your unit approaches 10-15 years finding new parts for the unit can be more difficult. Even if the price is not in the thousands, you should think about how frequently you spend money on the appliance's repairs because it adds up over time.

How many years does a typical AC last in Southington, CT?

The average lifespan of a typical central air conditioning unit is around 10 to 15 years. However, the actual duration can vary based on factors like usage patterns, maintenance, and climate conditions. Regular maintenance, such as changing air filters and cleaning coils, can help extend the AC's life. As the unit gets older, it may become less energy-efficient and require more frequent repairs. Upgrading to a new, energy-efficient model can provide better performance and potentially save on energy costs. Consulting with an HVAC professional can help determine the best time to replace your AC based on its condition.

How often should an HVAC unit be serviced?

An HVAC unit should be serviced at least once a year, ideally just before the start of the cooling and heating seasons. The system's lifespan is extended and optimal performance and energy efficiency are ensured with regular maintenance. A qualified technician will inspect, clean, and lubricate parts, check the level of refrigerant, calibrate controls, and handle any potential problems during service visits. To maintain adequate airflow and indoor air quality, homeowners should also routinely change air filters every one to three months. Regular HVAC maintenance lowers the possibility of unanticipated failures, saves money on energy, and assures a comfortable and healthy interior environment.

Brushed and vacuumed burner tubes Inspected and vacuumed burner and surrounding area Checked electrical connections and safeties Checked gas pressure Performed combustion test Manifold pressure-2.203 in.w.c. Bled all zones of air. When bleeding the zones we found one of the boiler drains was leaking from the packing nut and valve stem. Tried to tighten the packing nut but the leak did not stop. Drained pressure from the system and removed the old boiler drain. Installed a new boiler drain valve and filled the system back up with water. Purged all zones of air again and started and tested the system. Unit is working properly. Boiler pressure when leaving was 18 psi

For our commercial customer's annual HVAC maintenance, I completed a comprehensive inspection and servicing of their system. This involved replacing all air filters to ensure clean airflow, checking and adjusting the refrigerant levels for optimal cooling performance, and lubricating the motors and bearings to prevent wear. Additionally, I tested the system's controls and thermostat to ensure accurate temperature management and efficiency.

During an HVAC maintenance visit in Plantsville, CT, I discovered a significant issue with the air handler's blower fan, which was causing inefficient airflow and system strain. Upon further inspection, I also found a dirty evaporator coil, significantly reducing the system's cooling ability. The blower fan was repaired, and the evaporator coil thoroughly cleaned, restoring full efficiency and performance to the HVAC system.

Found that the customer changed the thermostat and didn’t push the wires into the wall. This made the thermostat not click in to the base like it should which wasn’t sending a signal to the furnace. Redid the wires and tested. The thermostat sits flush and turns the furnace on and off as needed.

Brushed and vacuumed flu pipe and heat exchanger Replaced oil filter, nozzle, and strainer Checked all electrical connections and safeties Preformed combustion and smoke tests 7.4%o2 44ppm co 0 smoke Had to replace 1 clean out cover due to the bolt snapping while removing it. While preforming maintenance found that the thermal limit disc was getting stuck around 100 degrees and not rotating to turn the fan on. After manually rotating the limit disc, it was operating properly for the remainder of the maintenance. The limit disc might fail in the future causing the blower to not turn on. Took pictures of the model and the part so if the limit does fail we will be able to order a replacement.

Upon arrival found that the condensate line had broken off inside the wall and was now between the inside and outside walls. Cut vinyl tubing above ceiling grid and joined it with a longer section to run it over to the sink so the ac could be run temporarily. Need to have plumber come and cut a tap into a drain stack so the tubing can be rerouted to avoid any issues with draining come winter time.
